Great first day

I’d like to thank everyone today for their donations. It’s been a steady stream of donations rolling in all day. Thanks heaps guys!
We’re over 5% of the way there, which is not bad at all for the first day. There are a number of media opportunities coming up over the next week or so that should spread the campaign to a wider audience. I’ll be sure to outline them here or on Twitter as and when they occur.
Our target is $10,000 for the initial ad run. That works out at approximately $900 per ad-on-a-bus, so we’ve nearly got one ad sorted…let’s go!

Psalm 14:1
1: The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion but advertising is not opinion it is persuasion. How can you justify “taking away the stigma of Atheism” when atheism is taught right throughout our schooling?
If you’re putting it on buses (such a public forum – to be seen by young and old alike) I don’t see that you are doing anything different from those you complain about.
What’s that “Biblical” saying – “those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”…the atheist version??? That’s like the pot calling the kettle black…either way – you are no different.

Great stuff! Thanks for this.

This is brilliant! Stand strong against the believers. They feel threatened – because they know their sky god isn’t real!
Go Atheist NZ!
December 11th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Tash: sorry, can you clarify what you mean by atheism taught throughout our schools? If you mean evolution then I suggest that you actually look at what the majority of believers accept (heres a hint for you, most of them accept evolution as it is support by vast piles of EVIDENCE)
Adriaan: Wow what wonderful piffle, bring some evidence to support your god hypothesis and I would be greatly interested in seeing it.
Warren Pratt: How can you claim to know the unknowable? Again, show me some credible evidence and I will listen.
Peter: Says the troll.

I cannot believe that people still believe that an invisible man is somehow out there in the space and awake 24/7, making note of every individual’s mistake, but yet, letting war and poverty ravage the poor of the poorest. Come on people, wake up, there is no God, religions are human made, they long ago tried to make a sense of the world around them, hence, they came up with different theories to satisfy their curiosities. Those theories have been passed down from generation to another and redefined to what we call today religions. Religions have been created by the elites to scare and control the masses – Wake up and enjoy life and try to do something descent to the benefit of your fellow humans. Religions have divided us, have instigated racism and discrimination, and it’s about time to let go of and brace reality and the truth.
Simon Fisher, you rock brother, am willing to work with for free, plus I’ll add my donation. Cheers

I watched the campaign in the UK with great interest, and I’m extremely excited to see it here. I was going to post this morning before there were any comments here, but my connection had issues. It’s interesting to see the religious loons have already made their presence known since the article on Stuff this morning. I think what people need to realise is that this campaign isn’t about trying to “convert” religious nuts – that’s a lost cause in any case. It’s more about the promotion of critical thinking, rationality, and letting people know that it’s OK to be a proud atheist. And although NZ doesn’t have a particularly strong religious lobby, it’s still disquieting that religion has a pervasive and surreptitious influence on public policy. There’s also more to this campaign than just religious – rational thought seems to be losing ground in this country (or the whole western world). I need only try to have a discussion about he frauds and charlatans posing as TV psychics with my work colleagues to realise that they’re consumed far too much of the kool-aid, and perhaps much of New Zealand holds these incorrigible beliefs in the supernatural, despite any evidence to the contrary. This campaign gets my wholehearted support. I would like to know more about the sceptical/humanist movement in New Zealand, so anyone who wants to discuss any of this, please contact me on contact[at]chrisdoms.com

Radio Live-Michael Laws has devoted half his topics this morning to whether his callers believe in god based on your bus ads….. perhaps you should give them a call… he might be aggressive

There is no such thing as an atheist. When you are on a plane crashing to the ground your very soul will cause you to cry out God help me or Jesus or something.
Ever wondered why your Atheist friends say God or Jesus all the time? Funny eh? Its inbuilt.
You are blinded friends. Even when you pass a bottle top on the ground. A child can see that someone has made it. It didnt come from evolution. Isn’t even the human eye more complicated than a bottle top? Dead animals don’t evolve.
Ask those Tasmanian miners that were trapped under ground if there is no God. The instant they prayed for water “The ground opened up! We had too much water!” I heard this sentence on our own National Radio.
What do you think? If you are wrong do you have a backup plan?
December 11th, 2009 at 9:44 am
@Tash, you said “How can you justify “taking away the stigma of Atheism” when atheism is taught right throughout our schooling?”
So all the religious schools you see _everywhere_ are teaching atheism? I did not know that.
@Adriaan Botha that is Circulus in Probando, a logical fallacy also known as “Begging the question”. That makes it useless as a method to make your point. Thank you for playing, come again soon.
@Warren Pratt I doubt anyone has ever sat down with a god for a coffee.
I made my donation yesterday. If there was an option for recurring donations I’d have selected that too.

I have one word for @Pete: Education.
Try it. It’s enlightening.
December 11th, 2009 at 9:53 am
FYI I will be donating an additional $1 for every uneducated, ignorant religious comment posted on this blog.
My wallet is cringing in my pocket as I speak.
December 11th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Jesus died for his own sins.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Hi Pete, to quote the esteemed Prof Dawkins “What if YOU are wrong?”
Or to quote Homer Simpson “But what if we chose the wrong God. And every week we’re just making God madder and madder.”
You have nothing to back up your beliefs and yet you feel justified in coming here and claiming that you have special knowledge?
December 11th, 2009 at 10:03 am
Adrian. Is that why you believe in God.
I dont need a backup plan.
No one likes to die in an aircraft crash.Of course they will cry out as the animals do when being dismembered by a larger creature.
I will be happy to go back to stardust so someone else can be given a chance at life.I have enjoyed my life without a pretend friend.

“There’s PROBABLY is no god.”
PROBABLY? LOL – I love it. Even you’re not 100% convinced of your own campaign. LOL
December 11th, 2009 at 10:05 am
@Wayno what a brilliant idea, I will match your donation – $1 per ignorant comment of religious nuttery.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Hi Regan,
Obviously you are not well versed in the scientific method. You cannot 100% prove the non existence of something. For example can you disprove that there is an invisible pink unicorn in my garden?
That is what it means by PROBABLY. I’d say if you are 100% certain there is a god you must have some pretty strong evidence so please cough it up so we can see.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:11 am
@Wayno I’d do the same thing, but I don’t know if I could handle the drain on my bank account.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:11 am
@Chris Doms: Nice one
I will do a daily tally + donation and post on here, or on a later post if there is one.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Goodness me, I never realised you had so many nasty religionists in New Zealand, and it’s such a lovely place too!
Great news isn’t it, hopefully it will kick start debate on the great question, and more importantly it will bring atheists together like it has done here in the UK, and the US of goddamn A.
I recently attended a book signing for the ‘Atheists Guide to Christmas’ and a presentation by Ariane Sherine later that evening. Now, wouldn’t it be great if you could afford to fly Ariane down to NZ for the unveiling and a a few lectures, perhaps you could even get Richard Dawkins to bankroll a trip.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Chris Doms and Wayno: You are both either much braver or have much larger bank balances than myself, the cost could add up pretty quickly
December 11th, 2009 at 10:14 am
I cannot believe that people let a 2,000 year old dead hebrew rule their lives. Please wake up.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:15 am
@donhomer
LOL – So what you’re saying is there MIGHT be a god?
I love it.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:15 am
@donhomer: At this point it’s bravery
Might have to revisit the amounts at a later stage depending on how many of the crazies pop up.
December 11th, 2009 at 10:19 am
@regan: Absolutely. There might be a god just like there might be unicorns and fairies.
