The solstice, birth of Christ, families and etectera... Surely you miss the point. Christmas is the retailers annual orgy of advertising and selling -- this is the true meaning of Christmas today.

Absolutely agree with the points you've made, especially when you read some of the comments religious belieivers, especially Christians make towards atheists at this time of year (e.g. - so you're working the public holidays then?). One can't imagine them making the same comments to Hindu's, Muslims, Zorastrans etc, so why make them to Atheists?

Hear hear! I'm sick of all this "Reason for the Season" bollocks and "we need to remember Christ." Christians might like to remember Christ, but the rest of us don't need to.

I personally find it all more powerful as a secular holiday for the reasons you've given above.

I would`nt get too out of shape on this ,its just part of the kiwi tradition,a hangover from a time when christi-inanity was the default position of the citizenry .
The religious BS gets a bit much but a couple of cold ones and I can tolerate anything( its the red wine that gets me into trouble, a veritable truth serum on me.).
The St Matts billboard was good for a laugh in the lead up.
